| William Hull becomes governor of the
Michigan Territory. |

Born in Connecticut in 1753, William Hull
served as a colonel in the Continental Army during the American
Revolution. He was serving in the Massachusetts State Senate when he was
appointed by President Thomas Jefferson as governor of the Michigan
Territory. Hull's tenure as governor came to an abrupt end when he
surrendered Detroit to the British in August 1812.
