Michigan Connection
Eddie Holland, known for his writing, Brian Holland, known for producing
and Lamont Dozier, whose forté was melody, were all born in Detroit.
Notable
The trio began collaborating in 1962 and wrote more than fifty of Motown's
most memorable songs. They teamed up full-time in May 1963 to work on
Motown's in-house assembly line, literally punching a clock when they
arrived for work at nine o'clock each morning. They also wrote and
produced more than a dozen U. S. top ten singles for the Supremes.
Big Hits
The trio wrote six consecutive number one hits for the Supremes, beginning
with "Where Did Our Love Go" in June 1964. They wrote the
following hits: "Stop! In the Name of Love" and "You Can't
Hurry Love" for the Supremes, "Heat Wave" and "Jimmy
Mack" for Martha and the Vandellas, "Reach Out I'll Be
There" and "Baby I Need Your Loving" for the Four Tops,
"Can I Get A Witness" and "How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By
You" for Marvin Gaye.
