Quotable Quotes
"But as for me, there's nobody that plays my style. Some of them
tries but they're not even close to it. So many singers sound alike - when
you heard one, you done heard 'em all. So why am I different? Can't
explain it, can't explain." John Lee Hooker
Michigan Connection
John Lee Hooker was born on August 20, 1920 in Clarksdale, Mississippi and
moved to Detroit in 1943. While in Detroit he labored in an auto factory
by day and at night played blues at house parties and clubs along the
city's legendary Hastings Street.
Band
Hooker introduced the world to a persistent, chugging rhythm of boogie
music, a form of country blues he learned in Mississippi.
Notable
Won his first Grammy for his 1989 album The Healer. He has won three more
since then. Due to contractual problems throughout his career, he played
under the aliases John Lee Cooker, Delta John and Boogie Man. Hooker
appeared in 1980 film Blues Brothers. Hooker sang the title role on Pete
Townshend's concept album The Iron Man.
Big Hits
Hooker released his first single, "Boogie Chillen," in 1948 and
it went to #1 on the R&B chart in 1949.
