The Temptations

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.

Michigan Connection 
The band formed in Detroit in 1961 and recorded with Motown Records. 

Band 
The principal members of the group were: Otis Williams, Paul Williams, Melvin Franklin, Eddie Kendricks, David Ruffin, Dennis Edwards and Edbridge Bryant. They initially formed from two groups, the Detroit-based vocal harmony group the Primes (a trio of relocated Alabamans that included Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams) and the Distants (a quintet with Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin and Elbridge Bryant). Originally called the Elgins, the Temptations were formed in 1961.

Notable 
In 1968, the Temptations won Motown its first Grammy for "Cloud Nine." They also won two Grammy awards and had a #1 hit in 1972 for "Papa was a Rolling Stone."

Big Hits 
In 1961, "I Can't Get Next to You" hit #1. "My Girl" went #1 in 1965 for eight weeks.
