| One
of the first light tank designs by the U.S. was the M1918. Small and
cramped, it carried a crew of two (driver and gunner), was armed with a
.30 caliber Browning machine-gun and could reach a top speed of 8mph.
Initial production was fifteen vehicles and one was sent to France for
testing. The U.S. Tank Corps felt it did not meet their requirements and
continued using the French Renault FT-17. Although a contract for 15,000
vehicles was awarded, the Armistice ended production, leaving only the
original fifteen vehicles built.
