M1922 Medium Tank
M1922 Medium tank
Photo U.S. Army

This tank was the first model the Army developed after World War I. Engineered by the Ordnance Department and built at Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois, this 22-ton tank was able to reach a top speed of 15mph. It carried a crew of four and had a 57mm gun and one machine-gun. Only the prototype was built as testing showed it was not a reliable vehicle. The main difficulty with this tank was the low power produced by its modified marine boat engine. Used as a test bed, the M1922 tested different components and innovations before being retired to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.
