| This
tank was the first model the Army developed after World War I. Engineered
by the Ordnance Department and built at Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois,
this 22-ton tank was able to reach a top speed of 15mph. It carried a crew
of four and had a 57mm gun and one machine-gun. Only
the prototype was built as testing showed it was not a reliable vehicle.
The main difficulty with this tank was the low power produced by its
modified marine boat engine. Used as a test bed, the M1922 tested
different components and innovations before being retired to Aberdeen
Proving Ground, Maryland.
