In March 1982, Chrysler sold its military division to General Dynamics. Under this company’s leadership, the M1 tank was transformed into the high-tech war machine that it is today. On the eve of the Gulf War the Army was receiving its first shipments of the improved M1 tank, now termed the M1A1. This tank had a more powerful 120mm main gun, better armor, suspension improvements and a new biological and chemical protection system. Almost all available M1A1s were quickly shipped to the Gulf and given to front line Army divisions. The tank proved its worth and not one Abrams was lost to enemy fire during the war.
