Michigan History is the
nation's most popular state history magazine. First published in 1917 the
magazine has more than thirty thousand subscribers. A colorful bimonthly
publication, Michigan History is published by the Department of
History, Arts and Libraries' Michigan Historical Center, the official state
agency responsible for preserving, protecting and interpreting Michigan History.
Because Michigan History
reaches more than one hundred thousand readers, it is an excellent vehicle for
sharing your research on Michigan's past. A broad range of manuscripts is
accepted each year. Submissions should demonstrate accuracy, exploration, use
of primary and secondary sources and a strong Michigan connection. Authors
engaged in extensive research and/or book projects are encouraged to discuss
the possibility of using excerpts from their work in Michigan History,
or drafting a condensed version for the magazine.
Manuscript Submission Michigan History acknowledges receipt of manuscripts. Submissions are
evaluated by the editorial staff and other experts from inside and outside the
Michigan Historical Center. Please allow up to six months for notification of
a decision regarding acceptance of a manuscript for publication.
Most feature-length
manuscripts are eight to sixteen, double-spaced, typed pages
(approximately 2000-3000 words).
Send one printed copy of the
manuscript and, when possible, a Microsoft Word file on an IBM-compatible
3.5 inch disk or on CD. Do not submit manuscripts in binders or folders.
Authors are encouraged to
research and include information on the availability of photographs and
other illustrative material. Submit photocopies (not originals) of
photographs and illustrations along with other manuscript materials.
Please list where photos are housed and caption information. You may
also submit digital images on a disk.
Michigan History does not
assume responsibility for unsolicited photographs, manuscripts or
books.
Include contact information
such as the author's daytime and evening telephone numbers, address, fax
number and email address. Include a bibliographic note or list of sources
for the manuscript, as well as a summary of writing experience.
Query letters outlining story
ideas may be sent, however an article cannot be accepted until a completed
manuscript is received and reviewed by our staff.
The editor reserves the right
to make any editorial changes deemed necessary for the sake of clarity,
accuracy, or conformity to an adopted style.
Michigan History uses The
Chicago Manual of Style, fifteenth edition (Chicago: University of
Chicago Press, 1993). Michigan History does not publish footnotes.

Accepted for Publication
Once a manuscript is accepted for publication, the author is notified by
letter with a contract and copyright release form. Upon receipt of these
completed forms, Michigan History schedules the article for
publication. As that issue goes into production, the author is provided the
edited manuscript for approval. Approximately one week before printing, the
author will receive magazine-formatted pages for final proofing. All
manuscripts are edited for style, layout and length requirements.
Copyright
Authors retain the copyright for their manuscripts that appear in Michigan History.
They are formally asked to grant Michigan History permission to print
their manuscripts as edited. They may choose at that time whether or not to
allow Michigan History the right to let others reprint their work as it
will appear in the magazine.
Payment
Authors are paid up to $500, depending on the length of the article and the work required
from the editorial staff to prepare it for publication. Payment is made upon
publication of the manuscript. The magazine also
provides authors with five complimentary copies of the issue in which their
article appears.
